A gel will be applied to your skin prior to the start of treatment to keep it cool and to ensure your comfort. Via a hand-held device, intense laser light energy will be delivered directly into the skin in short pulses. Treatments can last only a few minutes up to an hour depending on the size of the treatment area. Multiple treatments are recommended to achieve optimum results.
IPL Photofacial is Intense Pulsed Light that penetrates deep into the skin causing the collagen and blood vessels below the epidermis to constrict, reducing redness, age spots, dark spots and sun damage. The pigment imperfections then absorb the light and begin moving up and out of the skin. The spots turn into a coffee-ground-like substance and flake off, leaving beautiful, radiant skin.
IPL Photofacial can be done on just about any body part. Some of the most commonly treated areas are the face, neck, chest, hands, shoulders, legs, and arms.
Photofacial would not necessarily be called painful, but it can be uncomfortable. Patients liken the feeling to a rubber band snapping on their skin. The light from the laser is also quite bright, which may be uncomfortable for some with light sensitivity.
The length of treatment is dependent on the number of areas being treated and the number of passes the aesthetician makes on the area. For reference, getting an IPL Photofacial on the face only would take about 45 minutes
Photofacial results perpetually improve over time, with best results being seen three months after the last treatment. Sun protection and skin care maintenance are essential to the longevity of the results. Sunburns and over exposure will bring back old spots and freckles and dullness will return if proper exfoliation during daily routines is neglected. A new series of treatments are recommended every year for optimal results.
As with any aesthetic treatment, there are risks, however, this is why you should only trust an experienced physician and licensed aesthetician at ThinMD Med Spa. Clients with melasma will experience a darkening in those areas and should not be treated. Those who have been on a strong antibiotic or Accutane should not receive treatment until six months after the last treatment.
